Semi Final 1 – Sri Lanka Vs New Zealand at Colombo


  1. New Zealand has now lost in 6 World cup Semi finals including 2 in a row.
  2. Sri Lanka, for the second instance had a repeat of a previous World cup encounter.
    1. They have won New Zealand in two consecutive World cup semi finals now (2007 and 2011 edition)
    2. They have won England in two World cup quarter finals (1996 and 2011 edition).
  3. New Zealand almost scored the same number of runs in their last two World cup semi final match against Sri Lanka
    1. 208 in the 2007 edition
    2. 217 in the 2011 edition
  4. Tim Southee (3-57) has now claimed 70 wickets in 51 matches. He went out of the tournament as the third leading wicket taker with 18 wickets in 8 matches.
  5. Dilshan (73) has now scored fifty or more runs in three of his last 4 innings and is now the leading run scorer in the tournament with 467 runs in 8 matches.
  6. New Zealand has scored just five sixes in their last 3 matches. New Zealand scored more than 12 sixes in two different matches during the tournament.
  7. Ross Taylor has scored 14 sixes in his last 4 matches is still the leading scorer of sixes in the tournament, though he didn’t score any six in this match.
  8. Scott Styris (57) scored his sixth World cup fifty after a gap of 8 innings. Unfortunately for Styris on 3 occasions in which he scored fifty or more runs against Sri Lanka in a World cup match, New Zealand have lost.
  9. Muralitharan (playing in his 38th World cup match already) has been among the wickets in all matches in this World cup so far and his overall tally of wickets in World cups is now at 68. He has claimed 15 wickets in 8 matches in this edition and is the fifth leading wicket taker.
  10. New Zealand has scored 30 sixes and only fourteen sixes have been scored against them, in their last five matches.
  11. Ross Taylor has now scored 324 runs in his last 5 matches in this World cup.  Interestingly, prior to the last 5 matches, he had scored just 114 runs in his 7 World cup innings.
  12. Sri Lanka had seven, while New Zealand had five survivors from their last World cup semi final clash in 2007.
