Semi Final 2 – India Vs Pakistan at Mohali


  1. Zaheer Khan (2-58) has now claimed 19 wickets in the tournament so far and is now the second leading wicket-taker in this tournament, behind Afridi’s 21 wickets.
  2. Yuvraj Singh’s duck is his first in nearly 15 months and the fourteenth of his career spanning 251 innings so far. He is now the eighth leading run scorer in this tournament with 341 runs. He has also claimed 13 wickets in this tournament so far.
  3. Sachin Tendulkar (85) scored his second consecutive half century and is now the second leading run scorers in this tournament with 464 run in 8 matches so far. This is also his 95th one day fifty.
  4. Wahab Riaz claimed his first career five wicket haul. He has claimed 31 wickets in 18 one dayers now. However prior to this match he had claimed just 3 wickets in 4 World cup matches.
  5. Zaheer Khan has kind of made an habit of striking a wicket very early in his second spell, in this tournament:
    1. Ian Bell and Andrew Strauss – England
    2. Devon Smith – West Indies
    3. Michael Hussey – Australia.
    4. Misbah Ul Haq – Pakistan, in this match
  6. Umar Gul, wicket-less in this match ended the tournament with 14 wickets overall.
  7. Misbah Ul Haq (56) ended the tournament as Pakistan’s leading run getter, and a whopping 19th leading run getters in the tournament.
  8. Misbah Ul Haq scored his third World cup half century and his 14th overall. This also is his fifth fifty in 2011.
  9. Interestingly, all the Indian bowlers claimed 2 wickets each in the match.
  10. No sixes were scored in the first 79 overs in the match.
  11. Tendulkar and Misbah Ul Haq were the only half centurions in a match that produced nearly 500 runs. Both the batsman had their batting strike rates around 73% as well.
  12. 26th Over in the match was eventful in both the innings following an interesting sequence:

  13. The result continues the World cup record of no losses for India against Pakistan.  Afridi becomes the fifth skipper to lose a World cup match India as well joining Imran Khan, Aamir Sohail, Wasim Akram, and Waqar Younis.
  14. Incidentally Tendulkar is the only Indian player to have played in all five India-Pakistan World cup matches and has scored three fifties in those encounters.
  15. Waqar Younis has now lost to India in a World cup match both as a captain and coach.

Semi Final 1 – Sri Lanka Vs New Zealand at Colombo


  1. New Zealand has now lost in 6 World cup Semi finals including 2 in a row.
  2. Sri Lanka, for the second instance had a repeat of a previous World cup encounter.
    1. They have won New Zealand in two consecutive World cup semi finals now (2007 and 2011 edition)
    2. They have won England in two World cup quarter finals (1996 and 2011 edition).
  3. New Zealand almost scored the same number of runs in their last two World cup semi final match against Sri Lanka
    1. 208 in the 2007 edition
    2. 217 in the 2011 edition
  4. Tim Southee (3-57) has now claimed 70 wickets in 51 matches. He went out of the tournament as the third leading wicket taker with 18 wickets in 8 matches.
  5. Dilshan (73) has now scored fifty or more runs in three of his last 4 innings and is now the leading run scorer in the tournament with 467 runs in 8 matches.
  6. New Zealand has scored just five sixes in their last 3 matches. New Zealand scored more than 12 sixes in two different matches during the tournament.
  7. Ross Taylor has scored 14 sixes in his last 4 matches is still the leading scorer of sixes in the tournament, though he didn’t score any six in this match.
  8. Scott Styris (57) scored his sixth World cup fifty after a gap of 8 innings. Unfortunately for Styris on 3 occasions in which he scored fifty or more runs against Sri Lanka in a World cup match, New Zealand have lost.
  9. Muralitharan (playing in his 38th World cup match already) has been among the wickets in all matches in this World cup so far and his overall tally of wickets in World cups is now at 68. He has claimed 15 wickets in 8 matches in this edition and is the fifth leading wicket taker.
  10. New Zealand has scored 30 sixes and only fourteen sixes have been scored against them, in their last five matches.
  11. Ross Taylor has now scored 324 runs in his last 5 matches in this World cup.  Interestingly, prior to the last 5 matches, he had scored just 114 runs in his 7 World cup innings.
