Match 3 – Sri Lanka Vs Canada at Hambantota


  1. Mahela Jayawardene (100) scored just his second World cup hundred in 25 appearances.  This was also his 13th One day international hundred.
  2. Sri Lanka are without the services of Sanath Jayasuriya for the first instance in the last few world cup editions. Jayasuriya has now missed two records which Tendulkar has managed to achieve:
    1. Most capped one day international player (445 matches)
    2. Leveling the record of most appearing in most editions of the world cup (6).
  3. Sri Lanka as a team managed to score just 2 sixes in their massive total of 332 and interestingly Canada scored 2 sixes as well as part of their team total of 122 all out.
  4. Khurram Chohan emulated Shafiul Islam (Bangladesh) and Sreesanth (India) in a new ball bowler being the most expensive bowler in their respective sides in their first world cup matches. Khurram conceded 62 runs of his 8 overs.
  5. John Davison (aged 40 years), who was a revelation in the 2003 World cup and also Canada’s all-time leading run scorer had a poor match as he didn’t score any runs opening the batting. However, he claimed 2 wickets and extended his tag as Canada’s third leading wicket taker in one day cricket – 33 wickets in 36 matches.
  6. As many as 5 Sri Lankan players were playing in their first World cup matches – Ajantha Mendis, Thilan Saramwareera, Thisera Perera, Angelo Matthews and Chamara Kapugedera
  7. Muralitharan (playing in his 32nd World cup match already) with 2 wickets in the match has now claimed 55 World cup wickets.
  8. TG Gordon became the 71st cricketer to represent Canada in limited overs internationals also the 29th to make his debut in a world cup match.
  9. Today’s match marks an interesting instance of three wicket-keeper captains being involved in within the first 3 matches of the World cup – Dhoni (India), Sangakkara (Sri Lanka) and Bagai (Canada).

Match 2 – Kenya Vs New Zealand at Chennai


  1. New Zealand managed to reverse the fortunes in the same venue in which they lost heavily to India in their last warm-up game (Lost by 117 runs).
  2. Steve Tikolo and Thomas Odoyo remain the only Kenyan cricketers to have played in all the World cups since the 1996 edition.
  3. Jimmy Kamande, Kenya’s skipper in this tournament appeared in just his sixth World cup match, though he made his World cup debut in 1999.
  4. The first three matches of the World cup has now witnessed first time World cup skippers for their respective teams:
    • India – MS Dhoni
    • Bangladesh – Shakib Ul Hasan
    • New Zealand – Daniel Vettori
    • Kenya – Jimmy Kamande
    • Canada – Ashish Bagai
    • Sri Lanka – Kumar Sangakkara
  5. Kenya (69) is the fifth lowest team total in a completed innings in a world cup match.
  6. Kenya’s 10 wicket defeat by an opposition team is the second instance in World cups. South Africa won by ten wickets against them in the 2003 edition.
  7. Kenya continued the tradition of brothers appearing in the team in a world cup match – NN Odhiambo and SO Ngoche, both failing to score in the match and both were dismissed one after the other by Tim Southee.
  8. Bennett, Oram and Southee claimed all 10 Kenyan wickets in just 13.5 overs between them.
  9. Hamish Bennett claimed 4 eickets in his first ever world cup match. He has now claimed 18 wickets in 9 matches.
  10. Tim Southee (3-13), also playing in his first World cup matches has now claimed 55 wickets in 44 matches. One fifth of his victims were dismissed bowled (11 / 55).
  11. James Franklin (72 wickets in 84 one dayers) didn’t bowl a single over in the 23.5 overs New Zealand bowled and was slotted to bat in the middle order.
